A seizure is the response to an abnormal electrical discharge in the brain.
Anything that irritates the brain can produce a seizure. Two thirds of people who
experience a seizure never have another. One third go on to have recurring seizures (a
condition called epilepsy).
Precisely what happens during a seizure depends
on what part of the brain is affected by the abnormal electrical discharge. The
seizure discharge
may involve a tiny area of the brain and lead only to the person noticing an odd smell or
taste, or it may involve large areas and lead to a convulsion--jerking and spasms of
muscles throughout the body. The person may also have brief attacks of altered
consciousness; lose consciousness, muscle control, or bladder control; and become
confused.
Causes of seizures
High fever due to heatstroke and infections.
Brain infections from a number of viruses and bacteria.
Exposure to toxic drugs and substances such as excess alcohol, amphetamines, and cocaine
can certainly lead to seizures.
Withdrawal after heavy use of alcohol, sleep aids, tranquilizers.
Adverse reaction to prescription drugs.
Metabolic disturbances such as high levels of sugar or sodium in the blood, low levels of
sugar, calcium, magnesium, or sodium in the blood, kidney or liver failure.
Insufficient oxygen to the brain from
strokes or carbon monoxide poisoning.
Destruction of brain tissue form head injury or brain tumor.
Phenytoin
seizure medication causes bone thinning
Treatment with the anti-seizure medication phenytoin appears to lead to the loss
of bone mineral density at the hip in young women, whereas treatment with other
antiepileptic agents, such as carbamazepine and lamotrigine, does not.
Valproate seizure medication
increases body weight and causes liver damage
The results of a
small study confirm previous findings that treatment with the anti-seizure drug valproate tends to increase body weight. The results also show that patients
treated with the drug appear to have an increased risk of developing
nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
Seizure medication and bone loss
Use of certain seizure drugs called non-enzyme-inducing antiepileptic
drugs or NEIAEDs (clonazepam, ethosuximide, gabapentin, and others) raises the
risk of bone loss in older men.
Seizure help information
Q. Q: I've been having seizures since i was 15 years old, and I am now almost
27. I'm going on 12 years of having seizures and at the beginning they were
often maybe once a month so the doctors put me on tegertal and trinesca birth
control since my seizures were not decreasing they switched my medicine to
depakote. With still being on birth control and depakote my seizures decreased
to once a year which i could live with. Recently about two years ago my seizures
increased. Since the increase my doctor switched me to depakote er and increased
my dosage to 1000mg in the morning and 1000mg at night which did not help in
fact it gave me several side affects including increase of mood swings and
migraines. Every time I have seizure I also am on my period. Do to lack of
improvement and side affects they switched me back to Depakote 500mg in morning
and 500mg in afternoon. I am in desperate need of improvement and seeking
advice. I am looking into herbal medicine, acupuncture to help decrease my
seizures I am looking into more reasons why my seizures have increased. I have
had multiple test done including: MRI, EKG (EEG), Katscane multiple times and
all have come back normal.
Seizure natural treatment questions
Q. Last year I got a infection that went
to my brain and caused 5 brain abscesses and 8 seizures in 5 hrs caused by the
abscesses I am taking Keppra for the seizures till Dec then I can wean off it I
have been told i can take vinopocetine do you think mind power Rx would be
better to help the brain recover its left me with bad eyes and I get a bit
agitated with my speech I am back playing tennis and lawn bowls and I am quite
fit
A. Keppra is an anti seixure drug for oral administration. It is
difficult to predict a person's response to any particular supplement or a
combination product such as Mind Power Rx. We can suggest your doctor take a
look at the ingredients and discuss with you. We really can't give such advice
since, for one reason, we don't know your full medical history and physical
examination. Mind Power Rx is a very popular product with a high rate of
reorder, but we don't know whether it will be helpful for you or how it would
interact with Keppra.
Q. I got Robbed and beaten here in Washington, DC. I
had a seizure weeks later. Had a Bloodclot to the Brain, had cutting surgery to
the head. Taking Dilantin-med now to control seizures. Been hearing about FISH
OIL & CoQ- 10. Can I take these products for better Memory and Thoughts. I was
taking VITAMIN-E and GINGKO. I stopped taking these after I had the brain
surgery. FEAR of a another bloodclot or better yet a SEIZURE because I Heard
they were Blood thinners. FEAR for me. It seems the medical profession is not
really Up on this knowledge. Can also recommend something for my faulty thinking
and memory while you'll are at it. I'm doing fine now-so far so-good,I don't
want to have another BLOODCLOT at the BRAIN or a seizure! WHAT'S the BEST for ME
to TAKE?
A. We truly hope you recover quickly from the
difficult situation you were placed as a result of the assault. We cannot give
specific suggestions, but if you do decide to take any supplements, always use
the lowest dose. See memory
for suggestions.
Q. I have a friend who has a six years old child with
chronic seizures, she is at her wits end as the doctors keeps medicating the
child but she feels it is doing more harm than good but she is scared to stop
the medications, is there any natural alturnatives to drugs for this boy?
A. We are not aware of natural medications that treat seizure
disorders.
Q. My son is 12 years old with seizures and autism. He
is on Valproic acid and i am so afraid for his liver. Is there anything i can
give him to protect it. I am already giving him the carnosine. All these seizure
medications have me losing weight from all the worrying about the side effects.
I pray that one day a natural medication becomes available to treat seizures.
A. We have not seen studies regarding the role of supplements as a
preventive approach for valproic acid use. Perhaps acetylcysteine could be
helpful. Please discuss with your physician before using any supplements.
Q. Could I give DMAE product to my 9 year old son who has learning
difficulties. He also is on Tegretol medication because an EEG showed epileptic
form patterning, although he is not epilectic or does not have seizures.
A. We don't know the influence of DMAE on seizures, but we prefer
not mixing herbs and supplement with anti-seizure medications.
Q. Does the ketogenic diet for seizures work?
A. See
ketogenic diet for more information.
Q. Are there any seizure supplements that are proven to
treat or cure seizures?
A. We are not aware of supplements that have been proven to reduce
or treat seizures.
I am an epileptic and take Dilantin. Is their any
negative inter-action between Dilantin and macuna puama? I know that Dilantin is
metabolized in the liver, and some common drugs and supplements do interfere.
(e.g.: turmeric or ginger, whatever is in Pepto Bismol, and some chemo-therapy
drugs, especially Erbitux.) The extensive literature that I have found on
Google/Yahoo/Dog Pile, does not show any such problem.
We have not come across any human research regarding the
combination of Dilantin and mucuna pruriens or muira puama, nor the influence of
these herbal products on seizures. However, caution is advised in using such
herbs in those who have epilepsy since it is not clear what effect they would
have.
