Resveratrol capsule antioxidant in wine - What is the right dosage to take?

Resveratrol is a dietary constituent found in grapes and wine. Resveratrol exerts a wide variety of pharmacological activities. Because the grape skins are not fermented in the production process of white wines, only red wines contain considerable amounts of this compound. Resveratrol is a phytoalexin, antibacterial and anti-fungal chemical that is produced by several plants as a defense against infection by pathogens. Does resveratrol supplement use lead to a longer life? The answers are not yet in but many scientists are optimistic.

Resveratrol 10 mg, Club Natural,

Resveratrol
( trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene ) is a protective compound produced by grapes and other plants in response to environmental stresses. Studies have demonstrated that resveratrol has potent antioxidant activity and also has the ability to inhibit platelet aggregation. These actions may help prevent free radical damage throughout the body and provide protective support to the cardiovascular system. Red wine has about 1.5 to 3 milligrams of resveratrol per liter (a liter is almost 34 ounces).

Resveratrol in the news
If you haven't already heard about resveratrol, you will shortly. This natural molecule activates a cell's survival defense enzyme, which prolongs the time cells have to repair their broken DNA. It is not surprising that extensive research from all over the globe indicates that resveratrol has a wide range of beneficial properties. It is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-infective, and it activates the longevity gene. It's use is even attributed to the curing of serious health conditions. As red wine is a rich source of this amazing substance, many sources will reference resveratrol as "red wine molecules," "red wine polyphenols," "red-wine extract," etc. Unfortunately, there is a great deal of misinformation about resveratrol, so you need to keep the following in mind when reviewing articles and marketing information about related products. As resveratrol is found in the skins of grapes, red wine will provide several times more resveratrol than white wine. Grape skins are not used in the production of white wine. As resveratrol is produced within the grape skin in response to attack by specific molds, grapes and wine produced in moist, northern climates (where these fungi are more prevalent) yield more resveratrol. As resveratrol is vulnerable to fairly rapid destruction by light and oxygen, the fact that wine is stored in air-tight, cool conditions away from sun light protects the resveratrol content. Only immediately after a bottle of wine is opened is the maximum resveratrol potency available.
Since wine also involves the potential damage from alcohol and preservatives, many people prefer a dietary supplement source for resveratrol. Another good antioxidant is
Pycnogenol.

Resveratrol article
Have you heard the hype about resveratrol supplements helping mice live longer? It seems this red wine ingredient is now the rage and consumers are flocking to vitamin stores or on the internet to buy a resveratrol supplement. Before you jump on the bandwagon, you would do yourself a favor by getting a balanced viewpoint on this topic.

What is Resveratrol?
Resveratrol is a protective compound produced by grapes, berries, and other plants in response to environmental stresses. A high concentration of resveratrol is found in red wine, particularly Pinot Noir.

The Resveratrol Hype
What made resveratrol popular was a November 2006 study published by Harvard University researchers in Boston that reported mice lived longer when given a resveratrol supplement. The news media caught up with titles such as , "Resveratrol improves health and survival of mice on a high-calorie diet.”

How Much resveratrol is there in red wine?
Red wine has about 1.5 to 3 milligrams of resveratrol per liter (a liter is almost 34 ounces).

Benefits of Resveratrol
Resveratrol has potent antioxidant activity and also has the ability to inhibit platelet aggregation. In addition, it has anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and anti-infective properties. Resveratrol may even by helpful in preventing neuronal damage in Alzheimer’s disease.

Resveratrol and Longevity
Harvard researchers tested resveratrol on middle aged mice. Resveratrol supplementation increased their survival. What makes this interesting is that in previous studies over the past few years, resveratrol was found to have a similar benefit on yeast, flies and worms. This was the first evaluation of resveratrol on survival extension in mammals. One group of mice ate a normal diet. The second was fed a high-calorie diet and the third had the same high calorie diet but was given resveratrol supplements. By the time the mice were 114 weeks old, about 60 percent in the high-calorie group had died, compared to about 40 percent in the low calorie diet group and the group with the high calorie diet supplemented with resveratrol. The mice taking resveratrol had healthier heart and liver tissue, decreased blood sugar levels, better insulin sensitivity and were more active than the other rodents.

Resveratrol and Cancer
Recent laboratory studies indicate that resveratrol has promising therapeutic activity in various cancers, including breast, prostate, and neuroblastoma.

Resveratrol Side Effects
Since human studies with resveratrol are not available, we don’t know the long term side effects of daily use.

Availability and Dosage
Much of the resveratrol sold in supplement form is from the herb Polygonum cuspidatum. The most common dosage is 10 mg of resveratrol per capsule or tablet.
No one knows at this time the ideal dosage of resveratrol to take on a daily basis, and how it would interact with other supplements or medicines. I can only tell you that I plan to take one 10 mg capsule once or twice a week until more research is available, and I also plan to drink one or two ounces of red wine most evenings with dinner.

Resveratrol Antioxidant
Resveratrol is a naturally occurring stilbene derivative antioxidant having a number of biochemical and antineoplastic effects.

Antioxidant activity of resveratrol, piceatannol and 3,3',4,4',5,5'-hexahydroxy-trans-stilbene in three leukemia cell lines.
Oncol Rep. 2006 Sep;16(3):617-24. Department of Mutagenesis and Carcinogenesis, Cancer Research Institute, Slovak Academy of Sciences, 833 91 Bratislava, Slovak Republic.
trans-Resveratrol is one of the most relevant and extensively investigated stilbenes with a broad spectrum of biological activities. In contrast to the detailed knowledge of trans-Resveratrol activities in biological systems, much less is known about the effects of higher hydroxylated stilbenes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activities of trans Resveratrol and two analogues: the natural metabolite piceatannol (PCA) and the synthesized 3,3',4,4',5,5'-hexahydroxy-trans-stilbene (HHS) against H2O2-induced DNA damage in leukemic L1210, K562 and HL-60 cells. In conclusion, we can prove that all stilbenes investigated, trans Resveratrol, PCA, and HHS, manifested potent antioxidant effects on three leukemic cell lines.

Resveratrol and asthma
Anti-inflammatory and anti-asthmatic effects of resveratrol, a polyphenolic stilbene, in a mouse model of allergic asthma.
Int Immunopharmacol. 2009 Feb 7. Natural Medicine Research Center, Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, P.O. Box 115, Yusung, Daejeon 305-600, Korea.
Asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways, and the current focus in managing asthma is the control of inflammation. Resveratrol may be responsible for some of the health benefits ascribed to consumption of red wine. We investigated the suppressive effects of resveratrol on asthmatic parameters such as cytokine release, eosinophilia, airway hyperresponsiveness, and mucus hypersecretion, in an OVA-induced allergic mouse model of asthma. Resveratrol significantly inhibited increases in T-helper-2-type cytokines such as IL-4 and IL-5 in plasma and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and also effectively suppressed airway hyperresponsiveness, eosinophilia, and mucus hypersecretion, in the asthmatic mouse model. The efficacy of resveratrol was similar to that of dexamethasone, a glucocorticoid used as a positive control. These results suggest that resveratrol may have applications in the treatment of bronchial asthma.

Resveratrol and mitochondria
Resveratrol improves mitochondrial function and protects against metabolic disease by activating SIRT1 and PGC-1alpha.
Cell. 2006 Dec 15;127(6):1109-22. Institut de Genetique et de Biologie Moleculaire et Cellulaire, CNRS / INSERM / ULP, 67404 Illkirch, France.
Diminished mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and aerobic capacity are associated with reduced longevity. We tested whether resveratrol impacts mitochondrial function and metabolic homeostasis. Treatment of mice with resveratrol significantly increased their aerobic capacity, as evidenced by their increased running time and consumption of oxygen in muscle fibers. The  effects of resveratrol were associated with an induction of genes for oxidative phosphorylation and mitochondrial biogenesis and were largely explained by an resveratrol  -mediated decrease in PGC-1alpha acetylation and an increase in PGC-1alpha activity.

Resveratrol in raw and baked blueberries and bilberries.
J Agric Food Chem. 2003 Sep 24;51(20):5867-70.
Lyons MM, Yu C, Toma RB, Cho SY, Reiboldt W, Lee J, van Breemen RB.
Food and Nutritional Science Division, California State University-Long Beach, CA
Resveratrol in the fruits of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.), the lowbush "wild" blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Aiton), the rabbiteye blueberry (Vaccinium ashei Reade), and the highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) were measured. Although blueberries and bilberries were found to contain resveratrol, the level of this chemoprotective compound in these fruits was <10% that reported for grapes. Furthermore, cooking or heat processing of these berries will contribute to the degradation of resveratrol.

Mechanism of action of resveratrol
Resveratrol activates an enzyme called SIRT1. This enzyme, in turn, suppresses the activity of a molecule called PTP1B, which ordinarily works to decrease insulin activity. SIRT1 levels are reduced in the animals' insulin-resistant cells. Increasing SIRT1 activity with resveratrol improves insulin sensitivity by acting on PTP1B. SIRT1 has a variety of functions in the body,

Resveratrol questions
Q. I am interested in learning if resveratrol does indeed deter fungal issues. Quoting article by Dr Ray Saheilan: "
Fungicidal effect of resveratrol on human infectious fungi. Arch Pharm Res. 2005 May;28(5):557-60.
Resveratrol, a phenolic antioxidant found in grapes, has been known to mediate various biological activities on the human body. In the present study, we tested the antifungal activity of resveratrol against human pathogenic fungi before carrying out further studies to elucidate the antifungal mechanism(s) of resveratrol. Resveratrol displayed potent antifungal activity against human pathogenic fungi at concentration levels of 10-20 microg/mL. Furthermore, time-kill curve exhibited fungicidal effect of resveratrol on Candida albicans, but the compound had no hemolytic activity against human erythrocytes. The destruction of C. albicans cells by resveratrol was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. These results suggest that resveratrol could be employed as a therapeutic agent to treat fungal infections of humans." I am looking for more evidence. I am having trouble locating more supporting evidence on the web. I did find one reference from a patent application that did not support this claim. I am anxious to be able to validate the findings and claims as I am wanting to use this product as part of a treatment for bartonella, candida, lyme program for myself.
   A. This is all the info research we have on resveratrol and fungal infections at this time.

Q. My question pertains to resveratrol, and if it can induce migraines in some people. Considering the effect of red wine on migraine sufferers, is it possible that resveratrol can have the same effect? I just starting taking resveratrol and am noticing and intensity in the vertigo associated with my silent migraines. I would love to keep taking it, but I am concerned. Can you tell me if any resveratrol research has been done in this area?
   A. We are not aware of human research with resveratrol supplements that have evaluated its role in inducing migraine headaches. Keep in mind that most of the resveratrol that is sold as a supplement comes as part of an herbal extract and the tablet or capsule that you ingest as a supplement also has additional substances that are part of the herb. Whether the migraine headache is due to the resveratrol or some of the other substances in the herbal extract is not clear. For the time being, it may be a good idea to limit the use of a resveratrol supplement to 2 or 3 times a week.
