There are five major areas involved in human sexuality and libido:

1. Psychological -- The causes of psychological sexual dysfunction and low libido are numerous, and it is difficult to list them all, but most often low libido is related to depression, performance anxiety, marital stress or relationship problems, life crisis, financial difficulties, religious repression, or some type of mental illness.

2. Hormonal --
Androgens, such as testosterone, are a major component of libido. Testosterone levels decline about 1 percent each year in men, which may contribute to lower male libido with aging. Testosterone also declines with age in women leading to a decrease in female libido. Women who have had surgical removal of the ovaries notice a drop in sexual interest. Replacement of androgens can be helpful in those with age related sexual dysfunction. Testosterone is available by prescription only. An over the counter hormones, such as DHEA, converts into testosterone and thus has a positive influence on libido. Pregnenolone is another over the counter hormone that may increase testosterone levels and thus enhance libido.

3. Vascular --
Alterations in the flow of blood to and from the penis are thought to be a common cause of male erectile dysfunction. For instance, medical conditions such as atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), high cholesterol, hypertension, or diabetes reduce blood flow to the penis and genital organs thus leading to difficulty with erection or genital swelling.  Additional factors that can impede blood flow include penile injury, surgery in the pelvic or abdominal area, and sitting on a bicycle too long. Men who log several thousand miles a year on their mountain bikes suffer scrotal damage that could reduce their fertility.

4. Neural --
Nerve damage from disorders such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke affect the brain’s ability to respond to sexual stimulation. In women, abdominal or pelvic operations can occasionally lead to nerve damage. Sexual dysfunction is common in men undergoing surgical treatment for prostate enlargement or cancer.

5. Chemical --
Some chemicals involved in the human sexual response and libido include dopamine, acetylcholine, and nitric oxide.

Libido and Medical conditions
Certain medical conditions reduce libido, performance, or enjoyment. These include hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, and neurologic disorders, and insomnia.

Drugs and Libido
Drugs that interfere with libido or sexual function include some anti-hypertensives, SSRIs, sedatives, and beta-blockers. Alcohol's negative affect on libido increases with age. Smoking can reduce genital blood flow.

Q. I`m male 21 y/o and i have problems with my libido ( i don`t get horny like i used to get and i`m losing my sexual desire and i can`t have erection longer time )... i visited your web site and i read about Passion Rx but i don`t know is this the best libido supplement for me and my age and health ..also i want to know is this libido supplement natural and without side effects ...I want to know should i used the libido supplement every time before i have sex (like viagra) or i use a treatment with this product a period of time and than all gonna be fine with my libido or i must use this product every 2 days a week through the rest of my life!
   A. It is impossible to predict which herb or libido product will help any particular person. It is a matter of trial and error. Once option is to use Passion Rx at half a capsule in the morning on an empty stomach every other day until you notice the benefit and then use less of it or take it less frequently.

Q. Can lost libido ever come back?
   A. Depending on the cause of the libido problem, many cases can return.

Q. What do you recommend to increase libido that would be safe to take with no side effects? Also, if you took the maca to take it safely maybe one week per month.
   A. Just about every herb used to enhance libido has some side effects. However, the side effects are dosage related and different people have side effects from libido enhancing herbs at different dosages. One option is to take a low amount of an herb, even if it is a third or half a capsule, and be patient for a week. If no results then the dosage can be increased.

What might cause energy and libido boosting herbs to stop working after awhile and result in fatigue, impotence, bloodshot eyes, low libido, muscle degeneration (or poor muscle growth) after a few weeks or months of use? Other than discontinuing use, is there any conceivable way that a person could keep them working long-term?
Sexual herbs have dozens of substances in them that work in various ways so it is difficult to know exactly how they influence and enhance sexuality or how tolerance develops. Two possibilities include: resistance of receptors to the same stimulus over time, and depletion of testosterone or other hormones from constant stimulation and release from the herbs. There are probably other factors involved. We prefer people take herbs for sexual enhancement no more than 3 days a week and to take a full week off each month, perhaps longer.
