Health benefits of drinking green tea
Drinking green tea is a good health habit. Studies
have shown that regular green tea consumption can improve the ratio between
“good” and “bad” cholesterol, ease mild depression, help prevent diabetes and
more. One of the most encouraging recent studies, published in the September 13,
2006 Journal of the American Medical Association, found that among 40,530
Japanese adults followed for 11 years, there was a 16 percent lower risk of
death from all causes among those who drank more than 5 cups of green tea a day
compared to those who drank less than one cup daily.
Green Tea
health benefits:
Antiplatelet activity of green tea catechins is mediated by inhibition of
cytoplasmic calcium increase.
Consumption of green tea is associated with lower serum concentration of total cholesterol in Japanese healthy workers age 40-69 years; however, green tea
consumption was unrelated to serum HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides.
Some green tea catechins are chondroprotective and that consumption of green tea may be
prophylactic for arthritis and may benefit the arthritis patient by reducing inflammation
and slowing cartilage breakdown. Further studies will be required to determine whether
these compounds access the joint space in sufficient concentration and in a form capable
of providing efficacy in vivo.
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) has been suggested to have antiviral activity.
To determine the effects of EGCG on HIV infection, peripheral blood
lymphocytes infected with HIV were incubated with increasing concentrations of EGCG. EGCG
strongly inhibited the replication of the HIV virus.
EGCG targets multiple MMP-mediated cellular events in cancer cells and provides a new mechanism for the anticancer properties
of that molecule.
EGCG in green tea has protective effects against betaA-induced neuronal apoptosis
through scavenging reactive oxygen species, which may be beneficial for the
prevention of Alzheimer's disease.
Green tea has preventive effects on both chronic inflammatory diseases and
lifestyle-related diseases (including cardiovascular disease and cancer),
resulting in prolongation of life span
Green Tea side effects
Green tea has caffeine, so avoid drinking or taking the
capsules in the evening.

Green Tea Library Web Site Launched
Nadine Taylor, M.S., R.D., author of the book Green Tea: The Natural Secret to a
Healthier Life, announces the launch of a new, free web site, "The Green Tea
Library" (www.GreenTeaLibrary.com). The Green Tea Library is an organized,
simplified collection of scientific studies demonstrating the health benefits of
the popular green tea beverage. For centuries, doctors and healers have touted
the healing benefits of green tea, which are said to range from preventing
cancer and heart disease to fighting cavities. But is green tea's prowess as a
health-enhancing substance truly based on scientific fact, or is it more like
health food store hype? To answer this question, Taylor created "The Green Tea
Library," which gives an overview of green tea health benefits, and backs
everything with summaries of the most important scientific evidence currently
available. It's all simplified, easy to understand and arranged according to
diseases or conditions, such as elevated cholesterol, obesity, cancer in
general, lung cancer, breast cancer and dental problems. Taylor offers a concise
explanation of each problem/condition, then presents the most recent and/or
important studies showing how green tea can help. Green tea human studies are
discussed first, since they carry more weight, followed by animal and laboratory
studies.
Green tea benefit questions
Q. When drinking green tea especially for its health benefits, mainly weight
loss, does it matter if you drink it immediately after it's prepared or is it
allright to wait till later. I've been wandering if it would be allright to make
up a days worth at a time and keep it in the refridgerator until needed.
A. Green tea most likely should be fine if kept in the refrigerator
for a day, but we suggest drinking it no later than mid afternoon since the
caffeine and other substances may cause alertness late into the night and
interfere with sleep.
