as testosterone? In this Italian study, a total of 120 men (age range 60
to 74) were randomized into three groups. Group 1 was given testosterone,
the second group was given propionyl-L-carnitine 2 grams a day plus
acetyl-L-carnitine 2 grams a day. The third group was given a placebo. Testosterone, carnitines and placebo were given for 6 months.
Testosterone and carnitines significantly improved performance on
several tests that measure sexual function, mood, and energy. These tests
included nocturnal penile tumescence, Depression Melancholia Scale score, and fatigue scale
score. Carnitines proved significantly more active than testosterone in
improving sexual function. Testosterone significantly increased the prostate volume
and testosterone levels; carnitines did not. Carnitines and
testosterone proved effective for as long as they were administered. No
major side effects were reported within the 6 month study period.

This study investigated the hypothesis that acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR)
could have a significant effect on nerve regeneration after end-to-side
neurorrhaphy. The ability of the ALCAR to enhance nerve regeneration in
combination with various types of donor nerve injury distal to the
coaptation site was also determined. Twenty-five Sprague-Dawley rats
were randomized to five groups of five animals each, in which three
different types of donor injury (crush, ligation, and transection
injury) distal to the coaptation site were executed (groups C, D, and E,
respectively). Animals in group A (placebo) and group B underwent a
standard end-to-side neurorrhaphy. Animals from groups B to E received a
daily intraperitoneal injection of 50 mg/kg/d of ALCAR, and a placebo
was injected in place of ALCAR in animals in group A. Administration of
acetyl-L-carnitine alone did not prove to be a significant stimulus for
regeneration, as concluded after comparison among the two noninjury
models of the donor nerve (groups A and B). Indeed, the combination of
an injury model of the donor nerve (crush injury) with administration of
acetyl-L-carnitine proved to be a significantly more potent stimulus for
regeneration than the control (placebo) group, as measured by
behavioral, muscle morphometric, electrophysiological, and
histomorphometric studies.

The aim of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical
trial was to determine the efficacy of a combination of acetyl-L-carnitine,
n-3 fatty acids, and coenzyme Q10 (Phototrop) on the visual functions and
fundus alterations in early age-related macular degeneration (AMD). One
hundred and six patients with a clinical diagnosis of early AMD were
randomized to the treated or control groups. The primary efficacy variable
was the change in the visual field mean defect (VFMD) from baseline to 12
months of treatment, with secondary efficacy parameters: visual acuity (Snellen
chart and ETDRS chart), foveal sensitivity as measured by perimetry, and
fundus alterations as evaluated according to the criteria of the
International Classification and Grading System for AMD. The mean change
in all four parameters of visual functions showed significant improvement
in the treated group by the end of the study period. Decrease in drusen-covered
area of treated eyes was also statistically significant as compared to
placebo. These findings strongly suggested that an appropriate combination
of compounds which affect mitochondrial lipid metabolism, may improve and
subsequently stabilize visual functions, and it may also improve fundus
alterations in patients affected by early AMD.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the influence of L-carnitine L-tartrate supplementation using a balanced, cross-over, placebo-controlled research
design on the anabolic hormone response (i.e., testosterone [T], insulin-like
growth factor-I, insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-3 [IGFBP-3], and immunofunctional and immunoreactive growth hormone [GHif and GHir]) to acute
resistance exercise. Ten healthy, recreationally weight-trained men
volunteered and were matched, and after 3 weeks of supplementation (2 g carnitine per
day), fasting morning blood samples were obtained on six consecutive days
(D1-D6). Subjects performed a squat protocol (5 sets of 15-20 repetitions) on
D2. During the squat protocol, blood samples were obtained before exercise and
0, 15, 30, 120, and 180 minutes postexercise. After a 1-week washout period,
subjects consumed the other supplement for a 3-week period, and the same
experimental protocol was repeated using the exact same procedures. Expected
exercise-induced increases in all of the hormones were observed for GHir, GHif,
IGFBP-3, and T. Over the recovery period, carnitine reduced the amount of
exercise-induced muscle tissue damage, which was assessed via magnetic resonance
imaging scans of the thigh. carnitine supplementation significantly
increased IGFBP-3 concentrations prior to and at 30, 120, and 180 minutes after
acute exercise. No other direct effects of carnitine supplementation were observed on
the absolute concentrations of the hormones examined, but with more undamaged
tissue, a greater number of intact receptors would be available for hormonal
interactions. These data support the use of carnitine as a recovery supplement for
hypoxic exercise and lend further insights into the hormonal mechanisms that may
help to mediate quicker recovery.

two names for something, that looks to me like the same product; I'm kind

important roles in the human body. These nutrients shuttle acetyl groups and fatty acids
into mitochondria for energy production. Without carnitine, fatty acids cannot easily

acetyl-CoA, the most important intermediary in the generation of energy from
amino acids, fats, and carbohydrates. Therefore, acetyl l carnitine serves as an
energy reservoir of acetyl groups and both acetylcarnitine and carnitine help
improve energy production. The acetyl group of acetyl l carnitine is also used to make the important brain chemical

Is it too high a dose to combine coq10 100
mg with acetyl l carnitine 500 mg?
For most people, yes. We suggest limiting it to
CoQ10 30mg and acetyl l carnitine to 300 mg
or less.
I have read that individuals with thyroid
disease should avoid taking the alc and ala supplement but the
information does not state what the side effect is. I am 75 yrs old,
have taken the supplement 500mg ALC and ALA 200mg combo w/breakfast) for
more than 10 yrs without any apparent side effect that I am aware of. I
am in good health and very active. I also take 75 mcg levothyroid daily
when awakening for hypothyroidism. What is your advice regarding this
alc / ala supplement?
We prefer to use lower dosages but different doctors have
different opinions.
