Yohimbe Bark extract benefit and side effects, review of risks and danger, what is the right dosage and how well does it work?
Passion Rx with yohimbe extract is one of the most popular sexual enhancement products on the market with a very high rate of reorders, it is often used as a natural treatment for erectile dysfunction or impotence

Yohimbe is the name of the bark of a tall evergreen tree in western Africa known as Pausinystalia yohimbe or Corynanthe yohimbe. The bark has been used for centuries in some western African nations for sexual enhancement. It has been reported to contain up to 6% total alkaloids, 10-15% of which is yohimbine. In other words, a small percentage of a chemical called yohimbine is found in the bark of the yohimbe tree. Currently the extracts are sold in varying alkaloid concentrations, ranging from plain yohimbe bark powder, to 2% extract, 4%, 8%, 12 percent and up to 20% alkaloids. The higher the concentration, the more potent it will be and so a lesser dosage will be required. Consider a very popular and effective sexual enhancement product called Passion Rx with Yohimbe extract. Also, you can also purchase yohimbe herb capsules sold in a bottle.
This sexual enhancer is often thought of for male erectile function. Most people don't realize that yohimbe is also a sexual stimulant in women. Women like the enhanced sensation and engorgement of genital organs as long as the dose is kept low to prevent the adverse effects discussed above.

As with most herbs, we recommend taking breaks from use. It's best to take it as needed since it works so quickly and there's no need for it to build up in the system like other sexual enhancing herbs. These capsules are easily absorbed, we don't see any advantage to using liquid yohimbe except in those individuals who have difficulty swallowing tablets, capsules or pills. There is a possibility that if yohimbe liquid is quickly absorbed, there could be more unpleasant reactions.

Can yohimbe herb and yohimbine be combined with other herbs such as tribulus, muira puama, avena sativa, maca, catuaba,
LJ100 or hormy goat weed?
We can only speak from my personal and professional experience. Thus far we have combined it with several herbs and have not found any significant side effects. The effects usually start within an hour or two while other herbs take much longer, often days. Caution is advised when using a yohimbe supplement with medications prescribed for heart disease, high blood pressure, or any medication or herb that stimulates heart tissue to beat faster.

Side effects and cautions, safety, danger
Yohimbe bark should be used cautiously by anyone with a medical condition, particularly those with unstable hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, or those taking medicines, particularly tranquilizers, antidepressants, sedatives, antihistamines, amphetamines and other stimulants, including caffeine and herbal stimulants such as ginseng. Some of the side effects of high dose yohimbe supplements include anxiety, changes in blood pressure, heart rate increase, palpitations, dizziness, headache, visual disturbances, nausea or abdominal cramps, increased body temperature and sweating. We do not recommend it to anyone over the age of 65 unless in very small amounts. Since high doses may cause confusion and disorientation, it should not be taken while operating machinery, driving, or performing hazardous activities. As with many herbs or medicines, the right dose works well but too high a dose causes side effects. Allergy to this plant is rare. Many people who want to improve their sex drive are willing to risk some side effects in order to derive more sexual pleasure and performance. Just about every herb or medicine for improving sexuality has some risk to it. Herbs are generally safer than prescription drugs. The first thing you may notice after an hour or two of taking a yohimbe capsule or tablet is sweating under the arms. On higher doses you will notice a higher body temperature, an even higher doses lead to slightly blurred vision, mild anxiety, and a sense of not feeling well. Very high doses lead to heart palpitations. Fortunately, most of these adverse reactions only last a few hours. We don't suggest you take this product the same day with high doses of DHEA hormone or its relative pregnenolone hormone since these over the counter hormones has significant adverse effects in high dosages.

Do not use these supplements if you have high blood pressure, heart disease (including irregular rhythm), kidney, thyroid or liver disease, a seizure disorder or stroke. Do not take yohimbe supplements with any antidepressant medications or MAO inhibitors, or with foods containing high amounts of tyramine (such as cheese or red wine) or with decongestants, diet aids, products containing phenylpropanolamine, hormones such as DHEA or pregnenolone, or supplements that have a stimulating effects, such as sexual enhancement herbs, SAM-e, tyrosine, etc. Consult with your doctor before use if you have any health problems or are taking any medications. Discontinue use and consult your doctor if you experience high blood pressure, heart palpitations or rapid heart beat, dizziness, headache, rash, tremors, depression or hallucinations. Other yohimbe side effects may include nervousness, anxiety, mood changes, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, urinary retention, dilation of pupils, or skin flushing. Unpleasant reactions are dose dependent. Yohimbe extract increases body temperature, so we don't think it's a good idea to take it and engage in heavy physical activity, particularly in warm weather. Avoid it if you plan to be exposed to very hot temperatures. Drink cold water if you take any sexual formula that contains it. Yohimbe is safe in low dosages. Cardiac irregularities and elevated blood pressure are serious dangers with overdose.

Dr. Mehmet Oz said on his TV show Dr. Oz that there were 3 supplements he would never take. One was yohimbe. The product Passion Rx has this as one of its ingredients. At the time I did not distinguish the fact that there is a version without it. What is it about it that would cause Dr. Mehmet Oz to categorize it this way and is the amount in Passion Rx significant enough to matter?
Making such broad statements do not reveal the full picture. We do know that drinking a bottle of wine is dangerous, but sipping an ounce or two has beneficial effects. This is also true of many medications and supplements. The amount in Passion Rx is small enough to be of benefit while minimizing any risks.

Hypertension
If you have moderate to severe hypertension, then you should avoid yohimbe herb. However, if you have mild hypertension, then small amounts, that is, less than 150 mg of the bark powder, should be fine, especially with the consent of your doctor. The blood pressure effects don't last all day, only a few hours.

Research studies
Yohimbine pills have been evaluated in the management of erectile disorder and sexual enhancement by means of many placebo-controlled trials. It does appear to have a therapeutic benefit. In contract, yohimbe has not been studied much. Here's one summary of a study:

A 1977 German double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of yohimbine hydrochloride included 86 patients with erectile dysfunction and without clearly detectable organic or psychologic causes. Yohimbine hcl was administered orally in a dosage of 30 mg a day (two 5 mg tablets three times daily) for eight weeks. Patients were seen for follow-up after four weeks' treatment, and for a final visit after eight weeks. Efficacy evaluation was based on both subjective and objective criteria. Subjective criteria included improvement in sexual desire, sexual satisfaction, frequency of sexual contacts, and quality of erection (penile rigidity) during sexual contact/intercourse. Objective criteria of outcome were based on improvement in penile rigidity determined by use of polysomnography in the sleep laboratory. Overall Yohimbine hcl was found significantly more effective than placebo in terms of response rate: 71 vs 45%. Yohimbine hcl was well-tolerated: Only 7% of patients rated tolerability fair or poor, and most adverse experiences were mild. There was no serious adverse event.

Mechanism of action, how it works
Yohimbe bark contains yohimbine, an alpha-2-adrenergic blocking agent which acts through the nervous system to increase blood flow to the genital region. Although many pharmacological properties of yohimbine have been described, at the plasma concentration attained at recommended dosages in humans the predominant activity is antagonism of alpha 2-adrenoceptors. It is not clear whether the other alkaloids in yohimbe also have a pro-sexual effect.

Availability over the counter in health food stores and online
Yohimbe bark is sold widely in different dosages and extract potencies including 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and up to 20% alkaloids. It is difficult to give precise dosage recommendations for yohimbe extracts since sometimes manufacturers and formulas are not consistent in their content or extract potencies. In one study, of twenty commercial aphrodisiac preparations were analyzed and the amount of yohimbine measured and expressed as the maximal dose per day suggested on product labels ranged from 1.3 to 22 mg. Yohimbe tea can be made with the powder but the tea does not taste well. The root is not used for sexual enhancement purposes. The yohimbe tree is an evergreen native to western Africa. The bark of this tree contains a chemical called yohimbine and contains various other substances. Yohimbine has been available as a prescription impotence medication for a number of decades, and its popularity plummeted when the impotence drug Viagra came on the market. The amount of yohimbine in nutritional supplements vary; some yohimbe products have little whereas others have quite a high amount. The standardized form of yohimbine, hydrochloride or hcl, is still available as a prescription medicine. When you buy an over the counter yohimbe supplement, there will be yohimbine in it, the amount depending on the dosage and extract potency of the raw material in the product.

Timing and Frequency, how to take it
Yohimbe bark may be used either daily or before planned activity. In our opinion, since extract works quite quickly, it makes sense that it be taken as needed one to three hours before planned sexual activity rather than taken daily. The effects last several hours. We don't recommend you take it close to bedtime since it can have a stimulant and alertness causing effect for several hours. We don't recommend you mix yohimbe pills with alcohol or stimulant drugs, including high doses of caffeine. Small doses of the extract may make you slightly more motivated, but higher doses can cause unpleasant feelings and side effects, which would reduce energy. How long the effects last depend on dosage, but, in general, only a few hours. This is in contrast to other sexual herbs that can have an effect for a day or two.
Arginine is a safe supplement to take with it and does not have any significant side effects except when taken in massive dosages.

Dosage and dose
The effective dosage of yohimbe bark varies depending on the individual using it, the quality of the product, and the extract potency. A starting yohimbe bark powder dosage is between 100 to 200 mg. The dosage depends on the potency of the extract.

Use with prescription medications
I'm on beta blockers, can I take yohimbe?
Beta blockers are known to lower sex drive and cause erectile dysfunction. Small amounts of the herb taken infrequently should not cause any problems, but of course this has to be done under medical supervision.

What is yohimbe hcl, I sometimes see this on a supplement fact panel.
We are aware of yohimbine hcl, but not yohimbe hcl.

Combining with other dietary supplements
Q. I've used yohimbe bark for 8 months, on a daily basis, it was a GNC product brand, and the directions stated take 1-2 pills after meals up to 6 per day. I tried that once, but the side effects were unpleasant (anxiety and fast and hard heart rate) I cut down my dosage to 1 per day in the morning. Well, yohimbe bark at this level was great. No bad side effects, libido shot straight up, sex was more pleasurable. Point is, it is great if used properly. Don't over do it, don't mix it with high amounts of gingko biloba, tribulus, eurycoma, or viagra and vicodin. ( i did this once and felt that I was going to pass out, with an erection though). Used properly this bark will make you a lovemaking machine, and you'll feel more too. If used daily it will increase sensitivity. I don't use it daily anymore, have been off it for 2 years, because I think it built up in my system and interacted with marijuana, I would get really really hot and my skin would turn bright red. I went to the ER once because I swear I turned bright bright red, the doctor didn't know what to do, and he invited other doctors to stand over me and check me out. They gave me IV Benadryl and that cured it.

Q. Does the pausinystalia yohimbe tree grow in the US? Is it also called Corynanthe yohimbe?
   A. We doubt it. If it does, we are not aware of any large pausinystalia yohimbe plantations. Yes, another name is Corynanthe yohimbe.

Q. Is there an independent yohimbe review website that discusses the merits and side effects of different yohimbe products on the market?
   A. There are some websites that claim they are indiependent yohimbe review sites, but almost all of them are promoting their own product, often listed as the number one choice, and hence it is difficult to know which yohimbe reviews to trust.

Q. How is Advanced Yohimbe Plus different that Passion Rx with Yohimbe bark extract? I understand they are both formulated by Dr. Sahelian.
   A. Advanced Yohimbe Plus was formulated by Dr. Sahelian back in the year 2000. Passion Rx was formulated several years later as the doctor gained additional knowledge on effective aphrodisiac herbs. Dr. Sahelian is no longer associated with the vitamin company that makes Advanced Yohimbe Plus.

Q. Is there an objective yohimbe review web site that I can read about the benefits and side effects of different yohimbe supplements and sexual formulas that contain yohimbe bark?
   A. Not that we are aware of. Almost all of the websites that discuss and review yohimbe products are associated with a company that sells either a yohimbe supplement or a libido enhancing formula. Some web sites may say bad things about yohimbe herb in order to sell a sexual formula that they have that does not contain it. Therefore, read yohimbe review sites with skepticism.

Q. Do you have any information regarding yohimbe cream effective when applied to the genital area?
   A. We don't have experience or information regarding yohimbe cream products, so we don't know.

Q. Is a benefit of yohimbe herb improved athletic performance or better bodybuilding results?
   A. On the contrary, benefits do not include improved energy or endurance. The increase of body temperature as a side effect of yohimbe herb can actually decrease athletic performance. Yohimbe has no benefit for bodybuilding.

Q. Can yohimbe herb be ordered to ship to Canada? I live in Canada and was wondering if it was banned in my country if not I would like to purchase a yohimbe supplement.
   A. Canada has a ban on the import of yohimbe pills and products. Therefore if you purchase yohimbe, customs may seize the product.

Q. Is yohimbe herb okay to use with maca herb. l arginine, tongkat ali or tribulus? Does it effect testosterone levels?
   A. As long as the dosages are low, horny goat weed, yohimbe, maca, l arginine,
catuaba, avena sativa, rhodiola, and tribulus can be taken together. We don't think yohimbe effects testosterone levels in any significant extent.

Q. I read a website where it said yohimbe bark is devoid of the alkaloid yohimbine. Is this true?
   A. This is not a true statement. The bark does contain yohimbine. The amount of this chemical in a bark product depends on the quality of the raw material, the manufacturing process, and the extract potency, whether it is a 2 percent yohimbe extract or an 8 percent extract or a 20 percent extract. The higher the extract percentage, the more yohimbine is likely to be present in the supplement.

Q. Is yohimbe bark extract appropriate for women as well as men?
   A. Yes, this herb is not just a male sexual herb, it works in a women, too. A woman may need a lower dosage due to less body weight.

Is yohimbe a fat burner, does it cause weight loss?
Some people have less appetite when they use this supplement, but we don't think this is a safe herb for this purpose to take on a daily basis for prolonged periods. We prefer Diet Rx, a much safer appetite suppressant.
